About these Lettuce Wraps

Honey and Teriyaki together is a flavor pairing that just works. The rich sweetness of the honey against the tangy, salty teriyaki sauce is a true embrace of the phrase ‘opposites attract’. 

When that tasty Honey Teriyaki flavor combination gets marinated over perfectly seared shrimp, you end up with a mouth watering protein (you’ll love this similar Teriyaki Chicken and Broccoli, too). Pair that shrimp along side some flavorful lemon pepper rice, crisp veggies, and a smothering of spicy mayo. I mean, yes, go ahead and lick your fingers.

Ingredients for honey teriyaki shrimp lettuce wraps

  • Lemon Pepper Right Rice – Right Rice is made from beans. It is SO easy to cook and packs in some extra protein. The Lemon Pepper flavor goes super well in this recipe. Plain white or brown rice or even quinoa will also work in this recipe.   
  • Shrimp – I used cooked and peeled shrimp for simplicity’s sake. There’s so much flavor in this recipe, fresh shrimp isn’t necessary.  
  • Romaine Lettuce – Romaine will be the Honey Teriyaki serving vessel. Carefully separated iceberg lettuce would also work with its wide leaves. 
  • Edamame – Edamame is the unprocessed soy bean with a good amount of protein and a fun texture. 
  • Spicy Mayo – A little creamy, a little spicy. The perfect sauce to round out these lettuce wraps

Ingredients for the Honey Teriyaki Sauce

  • Soy Sauce – The base of our teriyaki sauce that gets thickened with the help of the honey. 
  • Mike’s Hot Honey – Hot honey has such a unique flavor that I like to call spicy sweetness. The sweetness helps create that classic teriyaki flavor.
  • Lime – Some citrus to balance out all of the saltiness in the soy sauce. 
  • Sriracha – Just a bit of heat to make this sauce oh so mouthwatering.

How to Make This Recipe

1. Start by preparing the rice according to the bag’s instructions. Once cooked, add to lettuce boat.

2. Then, in a small skillet, add soy sauce, hot honey, lime juice, sriracha, and salt and pepper over medium heat. Whisk the sauce together until it thickens a bit and is well mixed. Then add the shrimp in (even if it’s precooked, let it sauté for 1-2 minutes on each side). Turn off the heat and allow the shrimp to soak up the flavor. Add shrimp on top of the rice.

3. Cook frozen edamame and remove from its shell if not already shelled. Dice red onion and slice cucumber. Add to the lettuce boat.

4. Drizzle with desired amount of spicy mayo and any remaining honey teriyaki sauce from the skillet. Garnish with green onions or sesame seeds if desired and enjoy!

Recipe FAQs

How to store lettuce wraps?

If you plan to store these for later or you’re going to make these for meal prep, I recommend storing everything together except the lettuce. No one likes soggy lettuce. You can assemble the lettuce wrap just before enjoying and add a bit extra spicy mayo on top.

Does my shrimp need to be pre-cooked?

No. If your shrimp is raw, follow the same process, but sauté slightly longer, about 2-3 minutes per side until they’re nice and pink. If you’re using frozen shrimp (whether cooked or raw), rinse in a colander and let thaw completely and pat dry before adding to your pan to avoid excess moisture.

What other protein could I try?

If you’re not a shrimp fan, chicken breast would also work great in these lettuce wraps. If you want to keep it vegetarian, you could also cook tofu in the same honey teriyaki sauce.

Can I use pre-made teriyaki sauce?

Although this homemade sauce is quite easy to make, store bought will work just fine. Just add your teriyaki sauce to the pan to heat a bit before adding the shrimp.

Ingredients

  • 1 package Right Rice, Lemon Pepper flavored
  • 1 lbs frozen shrimp, cooked, peeled + deveined
  • 1 package romaine lettuce boats
  • 1/2 large english cucumber
  • 1 bag frozen edamame
  • 1/4 cup red onion
  • 1/2 cup cheese of choice

For the honey teriyaki sauce:

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp Mike's hot honey
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 tsp sriracha
  • salt + pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Start by preparing the rice according to the bag’s instructions.

  • Then, to assemble the lettuce wraps, take two pieces of lettuce stacked on each other, add rice, then the cooked shrimp, red onion, cheese, edamame, and drizzle with desired amount of spicy mayo and any remaining honey teriyaki sauce from the skillet.
  • Garnish with green onions or sesame seeds if desired and enjoy!

    homemade sauce seems like a lot of work, but I had all of the ingredients for this teriyaki sauce on hand and now I am marinating everything in it!
