About this Salad
Remember when I said that caprese salad is like the business casual of salads? Well, the business side has entered the building. 😉 This Caprese Steak Salad brings the professionalism, class, and flavor dimension! And it doesn't sacrifice on beauty, either.
Seasoned and spiced sirloin beef tips are seared to perfection *chef's kiss* and placed over a bed of lusciously soft and sweet butter lettuce, fresh basil, cherry tomatoes, and soft mozzarella cheese. Serve it as a pregame to dinner or make it the star of the show. Either way, you'll impress!
I used ButcherBox grass-fed steak to bring this recipe to life—and let me tell you. It's delicious, better for you, AND affordable! ButcherBox is a great staple in my household. I highly recommend!

Recipe Ingredients
- Steak - I used skirt steak from Butcher Boxer. ButcherBox is a meat subscription service that's completely customizable and perfectly packed for your needs. It offers 100% grass-fed beef, free range organic chicken, pork raised crate-free, and wild-caught seafood.
- Lettuce - I like butter lettuce as the base of this salad, but you can use a green of choice. I recommend something more delicate like arugula or spinach though, as opposed to something crunchy like kale which'll take away from the softer textures of this salad.
- Mozzarella - Use a large ball and slice yourself, or experiment with marinated varieties. I love the little bite sized balls of mozzarella you can find typically near the marinated olives at a lot of grocery stores.
- Tomatoes - I used cherry tomatoes, but use whatever kind you'd like. Opt for heirloom for a more traditional caprese.

How to Make This Recipe
Step 1: Prepare Steak
Heat a cast iron skillet to medium-high heat. Add butter, hot sauce, balsamic vinegar, and minced garlic to the pan. Give it a swirl or two with a rubber spatula.
If your sirloin is not already in small chunks, cube it into bite sized chunks and season with salt and pepper.
Place sirloin tips in your hot skillet. Flip each piece until all sides are seared. Use a meat thermometer to accurately determine when meat is cooked through. The internal temperature should be around 135°F. Depending on the temperature you prefer your steak, adjust cooking time accordingly.
Step 2: Assemble
While steak is cooking, assemble the salad. Layer lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, and cucumbers in a bowl. Cut basil leaves into small pieces and sprinkle over salad.
Chop mozzarella cheese as you prefer. I like to get cheese in each bite, so I diced it in small pieces. You could leave as large, round slices, too, like a traditional caprese salad. Top salad with shaved parmesan.
Step 3: Dress
Slice sirloin if not already sliced. Then, layer onto the salad.
Then, make the dressing. Combine all ingredients in a mason jar. Close tightly and shake. Toss salad with dressing and devour!

Shipping is free and the cost per meal is less than $6. Some of our favorite picks include chicken breasts, baby pork ribs, beef tip sirloin tips and steak, and bacon. Oh, it’s all so tasty! I like that you can customize boxes completely based on your preferences AND decide how often you want to receive them. I recommend using a cast iron skillet. They distribute heat evenly and will give the steak a beautiful caramelization. Whatever you do, you want to ensure that each piece has enough room on the pan, so cook in batches if you need.
Store undressed salad in the fridge for up to 3 days. The dressing can be kept for up to one week in a mason jar.
If you don't want to make your own dressing, a pre-made balsamic vinaigrette is totally suitable. A lemon vinaigrette or simple greek dressing would also be tasty. Or keep it basic with just olive oil and a balsamic glaze.
