Roasted Green Bean Recipe
What do you think really makes a great meal? You can have the most amazing main course, but if you don't have flavorful side dishes to complement it, your meal can fall flat! Tacos taste even better with fluffy rice. Steamed or roasted broccoli belongs next to a piece of chicken parmesan. Stuffing has a rightful place next to turkey. When you think about it, side dishes are so important!
Gone are the days of steamed green beans from the microwave. These Roasted Green Beans are a true upgrade, and they're a delicious, versatile side you can use to elevate almost any hearty dish. Whether you pair them with grilled chicken breast or teriyaki salmon, these tasty and crunchy green beans bring your whole meal together. Truly, they're America's favorite side vegetable!
While I don’t always seek green beans out, I really enjoy this recipe. You only need to put in a little effort to make a simple, flavorful side.
Quick and simple ingredients for this side dish
Green Beans: We'll prepare a whole bag, which is approximately four cups.
Almonds: The nutty, earthy taste pairs so well with the natural flavor of the green beans. Plus, toasting them in a pan brings the flavor out so much more.
Avocado Oil: This has a higher smoke point than vegetable or olive oil. This is important to ensure we get our green beans nice and crunchy without burning them.
Sesame Seeds: Just like the almonds, sesame seeds help bring an earthy flavor out of this vegetable.
Balsamic Glaze: Adds the perfect amount of sweetness to balance out the other flavors included in this side dish.
Equipment for roasting green beans
To make these Roasted Green Beans, you'll need a skillet, splatter guard, rubber spatula, and measuring spoons. If you have access to a grill, I highly recommend you grill these bad boys.
How to make Roasted Green Beans
- Wash and dry green beans.
- Heat avocado oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Place green beans in the skillet and cover with a splatter guard.
- Stir with a rubber spatula after 3-4 minutes. Then, add sesame seeds and sliced almonds to the skillet.
- Add 1 tablespoon of balsamic glaze and stir. Cook for another 8-10 minutes. Ensure green beans, almonds, and seeds are toasted.
- Remove green beans from the skillet and plate. Top with more balsamic glaze. You can also add shaved parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes, and whatever other topics you like.
Variations to this recipe
Roasting green beans in a skillet is just one way to get great flavor out of them. Here are some ideas for other ways to transform this vegetable:
- Change the cooking method. Instead of roasting these green beans in a skillet over the stove, you could roast them in a sheet pan in the oven, toss them on the grill, or crisp them in the air fryer.
- Add more vegetables! I love caramelizing onions along with these green beans. The flavor is incredible! You could also roast these alongside carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms...the choices are almost endless.
- Sprinkle cheese on top. Parmesan cheese makes a great addition to these roasted green beans. You could also serve them with feta cheese or goat cheese after removing them from the pan for tart flavor and a creamy texture.
- Use a different sauce or glaze. I used balsamic glaze in this recipe, which is delicious, but you could also use soy sauce, teriyaki, sesame oil...whatever flavor you like!
Green Bean FAQ
How do I store these roasted green beans?
Store them in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Do you have any tips for success?
Use a splatter guard! The oil gets hot pretty quickly and you don’t want to get burnt. You can also grill these green beans. I like using the 'foil packet’ method. Put everything in a foil packet and grill for 8-10 minutes. You get a mess-free grilling experience AND easy clean up.
Anything I should watch out for?
Make sure that you’re frequently stirring the green beans. We don’t want any burnt beans here.
Can I freeze these green beans?
I wouldn’t freeze these green beans, but they are good for meal prep. Keep them in the fridge ad heat up for a delicious side to whatever you're cooking. Dinner is always easier when part of it is prepared!
Can I cook these in the air fryer?
YES! I highly recommend the Ninja Foodi 5-in-1 Grill. It's my best friend in the kitchen and great in the summer when I don’t want any extra unnecessary heat in the house. Cooking time would be a few minutes shorter just because of how quickly the green beans will crisp. Check on them frequently to avoid burning.
Do I need to use green beans or can I use a different vegetable?
You don't need to use green beans. This recipe would be great with summer squash or zucchini. Cooking times will very greatly based on the vegetable.
Can this be made nut free?
Absolutely. Add in another vegetable or roast the green beans plain. You could even add some onions and get green bean casserole vibes.
