These Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes are so rich and creamy. Made with butter and half and half, they're smooth, silky, and will melt right in your mouth. These delicious mashed sweet potatoes will taste amazing with whatever protein and veggies will be on your table!
I highly recommend serving these mashed potatoes as soon as they're ready for the best experience. Just make sure you get some before they're all gone!
Mashed Sweet Potato Recipe Ingredients
Water: We'll use this to boil the potatoes.
Sweet Potatoes: I think the flavor in sweet potatoes goes so well with the flavors in other traditional holiday dishes.
Butter: This will help add delicious flavor and creamy texture to our mashed potatoes.
Salt: Adds great flavor!
Hot Sauce: I added this for a little kick. I think it complements the flavor of the sweet potatoes so well. However, you can omit it if you want.
Elote Seasoning: This is an incredibly delicious blend of chile pepper, parmesan cheese, chipotle powder, cumin, cilantro, and sea salt. I picked it up at Trader Joe's!
Half and Half: Really makes our potatoes creamy. You can also use coconut cream or whole milk here. Keep in mind that if you substitute with a dairy free alternative, you'll need to add about 3-4x the amount. This is because it will absorb faster into the potatoes.
Gouda Cheese: Technically, you could use whatever cheese you wanted here. But I love the almost butterscotch-like taste!
Thyme: I used fresh leaves for maximum flavor.
Parsley: I think herbs add a nice, earthy flavor that balances out the sweetness from the potatoes.
Olive Oil: We'll use this to help us cook. It'll also add some nice nutty flavor to these potatoes.
Kitchen equipment you'll need
To make these Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes, you'll need a 5-qt pot or larger, a vegetable peeler, strainer, potato masher, measuring cups and spoons, a cutting board, and a knife.
How to make the best savory mashed sweet potato recipe
- Pour water into a pot and heat to high heat. Let it come to a boil.
- Using a vegetable peeler, remove all of the skin from the sweet potatoes. Then, cut your peeled potatoes into ¼” slices and then again into quarters. We want them to be bite-sized!
- Place the sweet potato chunks into the boiling water. Boil for 20 minutes or until all potatoes are tender. You should be able to pierce them with a fork.
- Drain the water and turn the heat down to medium-low. Before adding the potatoes back to the pot, add the butter and let it soften.
- Add the potatoes back in. Then, add salt, hot sauce, elote seasoning, half and half, shaved gouda cheese, fresh thyme, and parsley.
- Mash the potatoes with a potato masher until you receive your desired mashed potato consistency. Stir constantly to keep them getting too thick. It’s best to make them right before serving. However, you can reheat and add a few more tablespoons of butter or olive oil to soften if you need to make them ahead of time.
- Garnish with fresh thyme, slice of butter or two, and enjoy!
Helpful Questions about these flavorful mashed sweet potatoes
How do I store these mashed sweet potatoes?
I recommend serving these as soon as they're ready. However, if you do find yourself with some leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
What's the best way to mash sweet potatoes?
Use a potato masher! It will help you achieve the best texture.
What should I do if I'm not serving these sweet potatoes right away?
As long as you're making them the same day, you can keep these sweet potatoes on the stove with the burner on low. Just be sure to stir often until you're ready to serve them.
Can I freeze these mashed sweet potatoes?
Yes. Add them to a large storage bag or a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 4 months. To reheat, place the potatoes in the refrigerator overnight to thaw and warm on the stovetop.
I can't find the Elote seasoning. Is there another way to season these mashed potatoes?
First, I'm sorry to hear you can't find the seasoning. It's so delicious! I recommend ordering some from Amazon! But if you don't have it on hand, you can absolutely season these mashed potatoes with something else. I recommend using fresh rosemary, oregano, or garlic. If you want to make these potatoes sweet instead of savory, I recommend using cinnamon or nutmeg. Or maybe even some maple syrup or pumpkin pies spice!
Is it possible to speed up the cooking time?
If you’re in a time crunch, you can microwave the sweet potatoes. Poke a few spots in the potato with a fork to let the steam escape. Then, microwave on high for 2-5 minutes depending on the size of the potato. This will get them soft enough to go into the oven for the final bake.
Do I need to peel the sweet potatoes?
You don’t HAVE to, but peeling them will help create a smoother texture. Because this is a savory recipe, the skins would actually help incorporate some earthy flavor.
