About these potatoes

Regular mashed potatoes are delicious, but something about mashed sweet potatoes just gets my holiday spirit going! While I love sweet potato casserole—and marshmallows, DUH—I wanted to give you a recipe that could be made in under an hour right on the stovetop!

These Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes are so rich and creamy. Made with butter and half and half, they’re smooth, silky, and will melt right in your mouth. They’re also seasoned them with plenty of fresh herbs and seasonings to take them up a notch.

These delicious mashed sweet potatoes will taste amazing with whatever protein and veggies will be on your table! And if you LOVE sweet potatoes, also try this Baked Greek Sweet Potato recipe or this Turkey Sweet Potato Chili.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Sweet Potatoes: I think the flavor in sweet potatoes goes so well with the flavors in other traditional holiday dishes.
  • Butter: This will help add richness and creamy texture to our mashed potatoes.
  • Hot Sauce: I added this for a little kick. I think it complements the flavor of the sweet potatoes so well. However, you can omit it if you don’t like spice.
  • Elote Seasoning: This is an incredibly delicious blend of chile pepper, parmesan cheese, chipotle powder, cumin, cilantro, and sea salt. I picked it up at Trader Joe’s!
  • Half and Half: Really makes our potatoes creamy. You can also use coconut cream or whole milk here. Keep in mind that if you substitute with a dairy free alternative, you’ll need to add about 3-4x the amount. This is because it will absorb faster into the potatoes.
  • Gouda Cheese: Technically, you could use whatever cheese you wanted here. But I love the almost butterscotch-like taste!
  • Fresh Herbs: This recipe calls for both parsley and thyme.

5. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher until you receive your desired mashed potato consistency. Stir constantly to keep them getting too thick. Garnish with fresh thyme, slice of butter or two, and enjoy!

Recipe FAQs

How do I store these mashed sweet potatoes?

I recommend serving these as soon as they’re ready. However, if you do find yourself with some leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave in 30 second intervals until warmed throughout.

I can’t find the Elote seasoning. Is there another way to season these mashed potatoes?

First, I’m sorry to hear you can’t find the seasoning. It’s so delicious! I recommend ordering Elote Seasoning from Amazon! But if you don’t have it on hand, you can absolutely season these mashed potatoes with something else. I recommend using fresh rosemary, oregano, or garlic.

Do I need to peel the sweet potatoes?

You don’t HAVE to, but peeling them will help create a smoother texture. Because this is a savory recipe, the skins would actually help incorporate some earthy flavor.

What’s the best way to mash sweet potatoes?

A potato masher, blender, food processor, or stand mixer will all work!
