Mexican Mule Recipe (Tequila Mule)
If you know me, you know I LOVE a good margarita (this Skinny Spicy Margarita is my favorite!), and the reason is because I am a BIG tequila girl. So I decided to take the tequila to a new cocktail and trade it for the vodka in a traditional Moscow Mule.
You'll love this Tequila Mule for its invigorating blend of tequila's bold flavor and the crisp bite of ginger beer, creating a refreshing and satisfying cocktail experience served in the traditional copper mug.
Photographing cocktails is one of my favorite parts of my job - without question. And enjoying them right after is another perk;). I love to put creative spins on the classic like this Italian Margarita or this Pickle Juice Martini. So this cocktail is just another one of my iterations of the classics! It is the perfect refreshing cocktail for the days when a margarita won’t cut it.
Recipe Ingredients
- Tequila - Use your preference. I prefer Silver Tequila.
- Cointreau - Goes well with the tequila (similar to Triple Sec you typically find in a margarita). You can substitute with any orange liqueur.
- Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice - One lime juiced comes out to be ~1 oz lime juice. Save a lime wheel for garnish, too.
- Simple Syrup or Honey - If you don't like a super sweet cocktail, feel free to leave this out.
- Ginger Beer - I love Fever-Tree brand because sometimes you get a super spicy ginger beer and it's just unpleasant. Fever-Tree has the perfect balance of spicy and sweetness.
- Mint Stalk - Fresh mint leaves are my favorite thing to add to elevate this recipe into the perfect cocktail.

Substitutions and Variations
- Make it flavored! Add a flavored simple syrup like strawberry or peach, or add a splash of juice like pineapple like I do in this Pineapple Jalapeño Moscow Mule or orange like in this Blood Orange Moscow Mule.
- For a sweeter, bubblier mule use ginger ale instead of ginger beer.
- Cointreau can be replaced with Grand Marnier, Triple Sec, or even Aperol.
How to Make This Recipe
1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour tequila, cointreau, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup into the shaker. Place one mint stalk into the shaker, too.
2. Shake vigorously for 30-60 seconds.
Add ice to the bottom of your glass and strain in the cocktail. Top with ginger beer (never shake carbonation, friends!) Gently swirl and add lime wedges. Enjoy!
Pro Tip
Really shake the tequila!!! Or even froth it! That’s a trick I saw on TikTok and it honestly really works! Simply froth the tequila with a milk frother for 30-60 seconds and it will aerate the liquor. It makes the tequila so smooth.
Do not use Ginger Ale instead of Ginger Beer. Ginger Beer is spicier and has a stronger flavor than Ginger Ale Soda. It's mild flavor will be lost in this drink.
What is the difference between an Irish Mule a Kentucky Mule and a Mexican Mule?
When discussing each different mule cocktail variation, it comes down to the base spirit used. An Irish Mule uses whiskey, a Kentucky Mule uses bourbon, and a Mexican Moscow Mule is a tequila cocktail.
Fun idea
Try making these frozen! I recommend freezing the ginger beer into ice cubes (roughly 4 hours) and adding all of the ingredients with 2 cups of ice to the blender. Pair them with my Watermelon Vodka Slushes.
Recipe FAQs
If you don’t mind a flat cocktail, feel free to make this drink in advance and/or store a pitcher of this cocktail in the fridge for up to three days. If you enjoy the fizz, keep the ginger beer separate until ready to enjoy.
This mule can surely be made as a mocktail for anyone and everyone to enjoy, even if you're not of legal drinking age. Instead of tequila add club soda and instead of the cointreau, use a splash of orange juice. Also ensure you’re using non-alcoholic ginger beer, but most in fact are spirit free!
This ginger beer cocktail is best with silver tequila (aka tequila blanco) as opposed to a tequila reposado because it is crisper. Silver tequila mimics vodka more closely (which is typical for an original mule), whereas reposado tequila has warmer notes because of the oak barrels it is aged in.
Serving Suggestions
The zesty and tangy essence of a Moscow Mule, coupled with its distinctive spicy undertone, makes it an ideal complement to light, citrus-infused, or fiery fare.
