Skip the drive to Panera or Trader Joe’s and make your own Turkey Apple Cheddar Sandwich at home! It’s perfect to serve with pasta salad or chips.

About this Sandwich

If you spend too much money at Panera on items like their Turkey Apple Cheddar Sandwich, this lunch recipe is for you. 😘 It’s my own twist on a turkey apple sandwich that’s also very similar to a grab-and-go sandwich from Trader Joe’s—but this one you make at home!

This sandwich features juicy roasted turkey breast, crisp apple slices, cheddar cheese right off the block, and peppery arugula, all served between some delicious sourdough bread. I also love to add some pickle coins and a spread like mustard or mayonnaise for some extra yummy flavor.

Serve it alongside a little pasta salad (this Bruschetta Pasta Salad is my fav!), some salty potato chips, or some greens like this Broccoli Waldorf Salad. This is the best turkey sandwich to make the morning of and pack for lunch later or whip up fresh at home!

Recipe Ingredients

Ingredients for a Turkey Apple Cheddar Sandwich on white background.
Ingredients
  • Bread: I used two slices of sourdough from Trader Joe’s. Good bread makes a sandwich, so get a quality loaf.
  • Turkey Breast: I used oven roasted turkey breast. A flavored one like cracked pepper or honey roasted would be good, too.
  • Apple: Slicing up an apple and layering it on your sandwich adds such a wonderful crunch. The sweet and fresh flavor is also a plus. 😉
  • Arugula: I enjoy the bitterness arugula has to offer. You could use lettuce, spinach, or even spring mix here as well.
  • Dill Pickle Mustard: One of the best condiments from Trader Joe’s! I love it! If you don’t have one near you, regular mustard would also work.
  • Dill Pickle Potato Chips: Another amazing Trader Joe’s find! On the sandwich, on the side of the sandwich…both are delicious.

How to Make This Recipe

two slices of bread, open faced and spread with mayo and mustard on a white platter.
Step 1

Step 1. Lay two pieces of bread on a cutting board. On one slice of bread, spread a thin layer of mayo thinly. On the other slice of bread, spread dill pickle mustard and layer thinly sliced apple slices on top.

Step 2

Step 2. Add very finely sliced apples to one side of the bread. The thinner, the better as it makes it easier to eat.

Step 3

Step 3. Next, add the turkey breast on top of the apples. Add a few slices of cheese on top. The thinner the cheese, the better. There is less chance of getting food stuck to the roof of your mouth.

Step 7

7. Now, let’s flip the sandwich together. Take the piece of bread with just mayo and cheese on it and place it on top of the other slice. Push it all together. You’ll hear a crunch if you add potato chips to it 🙂 Slice in half and ENJOY!

Recipe FAQs

How do I store this sandwich?

I recommend making this sandwich the day you’ll eat it. If you are preparing it for lunch in the morning, wrap it tightly in saran wrap and place in a baggie so it stays fresh and secure.

I don’t like mayo. Can I leave it out/replace it?

You can definitely leave it out. This sandwich also features dill pickle mustard which is so delicious. Cranberry sauce would be AWESOME on this sandwich. You could also try Homemade Guacamole or a fruit based chutney.

What should I serve with a turkey sandwich?

I recommend pairing it with a fresh pickle, Roasted Sweet Potato Fries, Orzo Pasta Salad, or even The Best Mediterranean Salad.

Can I grill this sandwich?

Absolutely! Butter each side of the bread and grill for 3-4 minutes on medium heat on each side until golden brown.

W O W! I made these for my teenage sons after their baseball tournament yesterday. We all loved them. Genius idea of putting crushed chips on the sandwich.
