About this Smoothie

This Strawberry Shortcake Smoothie is the perfect breakfast, snack, or post-workout treat that is extra creamy and decadent thanks to Oat Haus Granola Butter.

But, what is granola butter anyway? Think peanut butter, but made from oats instead of nuts. It’s a spreadable dream you can use on toast, on fruit, a top a smoothie, with a spoon, or in a delicious recipe like this one!

In the words of OatHaus themselves, “Picture all of the goodness of granola – in a rich creamy spread”. They’ve got multiple flavors you’re sure to love. The Strawberry Shortcake flavor used in this recipe is made with freeze dried strawberries.

Freeze dried fruit is underrated in my opinion. It’s bursting with flavor and so versatile. I use freeze dried raspberries in my Raspberry Chocolate Rice Krispies for the perfect texture and perfect taste. It also serves as a great topping to this smoothie. I find my freeze dried fruit at Target or Trader Joe’s.

Recipe Ingredients

ingredients for strawberry shortcake smoothie in individual bowls on pink background.
  • Strawberries – Frozen berries works best, but if you’re using fresh you’ll need to add ice as well.
  • Protein Powder – I used CleanSimpleEasts Simply Vanilla. The flavored, sweetened protein powder helps to really achieve the shortcake flavor!
  • Oat Haus Strawberry Shortcake Granola Butter – This stuff is DELICIOUS. Even my dog Georgia is obsessed. Code COURTNEY15 saves you $$ on their website!

Substitutions and Variations

Fruit:

This is a STRAWBERRY Shortcake Smoothie but that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative with your fruits. Add some banana for a bit more volume and sweetness to this smoothie. Raspberries in addition to or in place of the strawberries would also be quite tasty. Oooh or pomegranate! That would be a delicious addition also.

If you’re using fresh fruit instead of frozen, you’ll want to add a handful of ice. Just note if you take this route your smoothie will be less creamy.

Protein powder:

I used CleanSimpleEats Simply Vanilla protein powder because that’s been my favorite at the moment, but any vanilla protein powder will do. CleanSimpleEats actually has a Strawberry Cheesecake flavored protein (CODE: APAIGE10) that would really take the flavors of this smoothie up a notch. I would avoid using unflavored as the protein powder helps with the sweetness in this smoothie, but if you do add a pitted date or some honey for sweetness.

Milk:

Any milk will do. I used almond but try regular dairy milk, oat, soy, cashew, you name it. I also think a strawberry flavored FairLife Protein Drink or Strawberry Premier Protein Drink would be amazing in place of the almond milk.

Recipe FAQs

How can I make my smoothie thicker?

Note: If you like your smoothie thicker, add less almond milk. If you want to drink it with a straw, you can add more almond milk.

What are the best smoothie toppings?

Smoothies in my eyes are a blank canvas for ALL of the toppings. I suggest more granola butter, granola (Safe and Fair Strawberry Cheesecake HELLO, you can use my code APAIGEOFPOSITIVITY for 10% off), fresh berries, freeze dried fruit, crushed graham crackers, your favorite cereal, chia seeds, or some chopped nuts on top of this Strawberry Shortcake Smoothie.

Should I add ice to my smoothie?

If you’re using frozen fruit, no need to add ice to your smoothie. The frozen fruit + almond milk combo will create the perfect consistency. However, if you are using fresh strawberries, you will want to add about a cup of ice to your blender. This will create a slightly less flavorful smoothie as compared to using frozen berries, but still mighty delicious.

Can I make this without Granola Butter?

The granola butter really helps create the shortcake flavor. However, if you don’t have any, I think cashew butter, almond butter, or cookie butter could create a similar flavor.

This smoothie was SO easy to make (literally two minutes) and it was delicious! 3 and 12 year old approved (sans protein powder) Next time, I will sneak it in as a milkshake – it’s that good!

If I substitute yogurt for the protein powder, how much do I use and would I add vanilla extract?

    1. 5 stars
Hi Gina! We suggest 1/3 cup of greek yogurt and ~1/2 tsp of vanilla. You may want to add a bit of honey/other sweetner of choice since the protein powder is sweetened. Or just use vanilla greek yogurt!
