A tart, sweet, and healthy treat
What do cherries go well with? Chocolate. Period.
It’s impossible to have just one of those chocolate covered cherry sample from Cherry Republic (Michiganders, you know what I’m talking about). Something about that tart and sweet flavor combination that just works SO well.
I set out to recreate that unbeatable taste, but in smoothie form. The result is this Chocolate Cherry Smoothie that is extremely simple to make and actually tastes more like a milkshake! It even reminds me a little of Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream.
Whether you’re looking for a healthy breakfast, post-workout snack, or even lightened up dessert, this Cherry Chip Smoothie is for you. Just toss a handful of nutritious ingredients into your blender and you’ve got a healthy and delicious treat.
Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Ingredients
Frozen Cherry Medley - Frozen cherries are PACKED with flavor and PACKED with nutrients. Cherries are the star of the show in this recipe.
Two Good Vanilla Yogurt - Greek yogurt creates the creamiest texture to this Chocolate Cherry Smoothie and also adds some extra protein!
Almond Milk - I recommend vanilla unsweetened almond milk.
Chocolate Protein Powder - I used CleanSimpleEats. The Brownie Batter protein is my favorite chocolate protein of any brand.
Almond Extract - This adds additional sweet, nutty, and fruity flavors.
Mini Chocolate Chips - We will blend these in for a little cherry chip action.
Kitchen equipment & tools needed
To make a Cherry Chip Smoothie you will need a high speed blender, rubber spatula, and measuring cups and spoons.
How to make the best Chocolate Cherry Smoothie
This smoothie is silly easy to make! Just two simple steps.
- Add all of the ingredients to your high speed blender.
- Blend on high speed for 45-60 seconds until smooth throughout or until all of the cherries are blended. Stop the blender once halfway through and use your rubber spatula to scrape down the sides.
If you’d like a thicker consistency for a smoothie bowl, add less almond milk. If you want to drink it with a straw, you can add more almond milk.
You can add in the chocolate chips for just the last few seconds and they’ll stay in larger pieces for more of a cherry chip smoothie if you want that added texture.
the best smoothie toppings
Make this smoothie your own! Use what you like, leave out what you don't. Here are some of my favorite smoothie additions.
Smoothie add-ins: Chia seeds, ground flax, maca powder, cacao powder, cacao nibs, nut butter (I reccomend almond butter in this one!)
Smoothie toppings: Chia seeds, granola, cereal, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, dried fruit, fresh fruit, a dollop of yogurt.
Chocolate Cherry Smoothie FAQs
Definitely! Adding veggies to a smoothie is a great way to get some extra nutrients. I suggest spinach or frozen cauliflower. This Chocolate Cherry Smoothie is flavor PACKED so you won’t even taste the vegetables.
If you’re using frozen fruit, no need to add ice to your smoothie. The frozen fruit + almond milk combo will create the perfect consistency. However, if you are using fresh fruit, you will want to add about a cup of ice to your blender. This will create a slightly less flavorful smoothie as compared to using frozen fruit, but still mighty delicious.
Nope! Feel free to leave out the protein powder and instead add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to achieve that rich chocolatey taste.
To make your Chocolate Cherry Smoothie thicker, you could try a few different things. Add ½ cup of oats or a quarter avocado. You could also add a ½ teaspoon of xanthum gum prior to blending. Each of these options will help to thicken up your smoothie and keep it super healthy.

this is seriously the best smoothie I've ever had. It tastes like ice cream! In my usual rotation too.
I can't stop making this smoothie! I've been using Vital Proteins chocolate collagen and adding a tad of cocoa powder too (the protein is slightly less chocolatey flavored) and it is just perfect.
SOOOO good. Absolutely love this smoothie. Would have taken a picture but enjoyed it too much and it was gone too quickly.
You sold me on Cherry Republic…..
