Tropical fruit flavors paired with coconut rum, this Bahama Mama Drink will take you straight to a tropical island. I love using OLIPOP sparkling tonics as mixers in my cocktails and the Orange Squeeze flavor brings this drink to life.

This post was made in partnership with OLIPOP. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

About this Cocktail

Picture this: You’re on the beach, feet kicked up on your lounge chair, sun is shining and it’s hovering around 80 degrees while you’ve got the most delicious cocktail in your hand. Let that cocktail be this Bahama Mama Drink. It’s perfectly fruity, sweet, and bubbly thanks to Orange Squeeze OLIPOP.

What is OLIPOP, you ask. OLIPOP is a bubbly beverage just like your favorite pop, but without all of the unnecessary added ingredients. It’s a sparkling tonic beverage with botanicals, no added sugar, and microbiome + digestive support. All of that aside, it just tastes AMAZING. I love using OLIPOP when crafting cocktails as a wonderful mixer to enhance the final product. You can shop for OLIPOP here on their site and use my code APAIGEOFPOSITIVITY15 for 15% off, or they also just launched in Publix if you want to pick it up there!

I don’t know about you, but I’d take a vacation to the Bahamas right about now. Or at least just some warmer weather. But until then I will be enjoying this Bahama Mama Drink which may very well take me there.

We add fruit flavors with both the citrusy Orange OLIPOP and sweet pineapple juice which pair perfectly with the creamy coconut rum for the most perfect tropical drink. I’m warning you now, you may not be able to stop at just one.

Recipe Ingredients

can of olipop surrounded by limes, orange slices, and fresh herbs.
  • Orange Squeeze OLIPOP: Said best by OLIPOP themselves, “Clementine and mandarin juices collide with a hint of lemon to produce a bright twist on the nostalgic classic.”
  • Pineapple juice: Fresh, sweet, bright. This cocktail isn’t the same without it!
  • Coconut rum: This brings in the tropical vibes to your drink.
  • Rum: Brings out a stronger richer rum flavor that isn’t achieved with coconut rum alone.

See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make it frozen?

If you love a frozen boozy drink (think strawberry daiquiri or piña colada), you can absolutely take all of the cocktail ingredients and add them to the blender. You’ll lose the bubbles from OLIPOP but the flavor will still be on point.

Can I shake all of the ingredients in my cocktail shaker?

PLEASE do not shake the OLIPOP. It is carbonated and your Bahama Mama will become a Bahama explosion very quickly.

When it comes to stirring vs. shaking it’s important to know your drink. If it’s made right in the glass you’re drinking from, stirring with a cocktail spoon is the way to go. Additionally, if bubbles are involved (club soda, seltzer, champagne, etc) you obviously want to stir instead of shake. Shaking is best for drinks that contain milk or cream liquors, sour mixes, or egg whites like I do in my Vodka Sour. Shaking is also common for crafting a martini. Using a cocktail shaker gives you a better balance of flavors and can give you a super cold drink without actually putting ice in the glass if instead you shake with ice.

Do I need to use plain AND coconut rum?

The coconut rum is non-negotiable in the Bahama Mama. The coconut is what gives the drink its tropical taste. As for the regular rum, you can replace this with more coconut rum, however do note that most coconut rums are actually coconut flavored liqueurs made with rum. Liqueurs have more sugar and a lower alcohol content, so do note if you skip the plain rum you’ll have a sweeter, more diluted drink.

Why are Bahama Mamas colored red. What makes it red?

Some Bahama Mama recipes include grenadine which is a pomegranate flavored syrup colored deeply red. If you’d like, you can add a splash to your drink after you’ve put it in your glass and watch the ombré effect commence. You could also use raspberry, cherry, or strawberry syrup for a similar effect.

How do you store it?

Because the OLIPOP is carbonated, I don’t recommend storing this cocktail. You can mix the other ingredients before and serve in a pitcher, but wait until prior to serving to add the OLIPOP.

When you add your OLIPOP to the shaker, stir, NOT SHAKE! If you shake, your cocktail will explode everywhere.
To make this a mocktail, use coconut milk in place of the rum!
