Ground Turkey FAQs
Raw ground turkey can usually be kept in the fridge 3-4 days after purchase, but check the expiration date! It should be a uniform light pink in color, and have minimal/no smell. If you plan to store raw turkey for longer, opt for the freezer.
Ground turkey can be kept in the freezer safely for up to 1 year, but remains freshest if used within 3-4 months.
Defrost frozen ground turkey overnight in the refrigerator which may take 12-24 hours. You can also use the microwave to defrost, but this may result in drier meat. Avoid thawing turkey at room temperature — if left out, it will begin to grow harmful bacterias.
Ground turkey is overall a healthy option when it comes to ground meat. It is high in protein and iron and is lower than ground beef in saturated fat, which may be better for heart health. You can purchase ground turkey a range of different fat percentages. Ground turkey breast is leanest (~99% lean) whereas some of the higher fat content varieties include some dark meat, too.
