Pomegranate Moscow Mule
I don’t know what it is about copper mugs, but they really do remind me of the holiday season. However, a classic mule gives stronger summer vibes to me. So in order to take this drink full holiday mode, I created a pomegranate variation.
This Pomegranate Moscow Mule is such a festive holiday cocktail and is absolutely delicious. It has the same base ingredients as a classic moscow mule, but also incorporates pomegranate juice (and pomegranate vodka, if you choose!). Or if tequila is your thing, check out this Tequila Mule, instead.
And if you’re looking for another good drink to try for your next holiday party, I think you’d also love this Cranberry Whiskey Sour or this Pomegranate Champagne Punch, too!
Recipe Inspiration
Holiday Cocktails are my JAM. For real some of my favorite recipes to create! I love playing with the flavors of classic cocktails whether be margs (like this Thanksgiving Margarita or a Christmas Margarita (coming soon!)) or spritzes (like this Apple Cider Spritz).
Plus, it feels more authentic and genuine to make guests a homemade cocktail rather than just opening a bottle of wine at a holiday gathering – and you’re hearing this from a BIG wine girlie.
Recipe Ingredients
- Vodka - You can also use Pomegranate Liqueur like PAMA, though it is much harder to find.
- Pomegranate Juice - Pom Wonderful is my favorite! You can find it in most all grocery stores.
- Ginger Beer - I like diet ginger beer with no added sugar.
- Lime - Every good Moscow Mule has plenty of fresh lime juice.
For garnish
- Sprig of Fresh Mint or Sprig of Fresh Rosemary
- Fresh Pomegranates - See FAQs for tips on de-seeding whole pomegranates, or you can usually just the seeds in the produce section of the grocery store.
- Lime Wheel
See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
Substitutions and Variations
- Make another flavor! Use cranberry juice, grapefruit juice, or cherry juice in place of the pomegranate. Or try this Blood Orange Moscow Mule instead.
- Make it spicy with thinly sliced jalapeño.
- Make a Kentucky Mule with whiskey instead of vodka. Or bourbon goes well in this mixed drink, too, if you're a bourbon lover!
Fun idea
Add these Holiday Ice Cubes to your pomegranate mule cocktail for the most festive experience.
How to Make This Festive Drink
1. In a cocktail shaker, add ice, vodka, pomegranate juice, and the juice of one lime. Shake for 30-45 seconds until combined.
2. Add ice to two mule glasses. Divide the cocktail into two and pour over ice. Top each mule with ginger beer. Garnish with a lime wedge, mint sprig, and fresh pomegranates. Serve chilled!
Pro Tip
I love to pop my copper mule mugs into the freezer 20 minutes before serving the cocktails. It keeps them super chilled and refreshing!
Recipe FAQs
I wouldn’t recommend storing this one for long periods of time. If you’d like to make ahead (or in a pitcher/larger serving), add everything together except the ginger beer. This is best fresh and chilled.
A good mule is SUPER cold. The copper cup helps insulate the drink keeping the cocktail cool and refreshing until not the last sip. Some research also support the idea that the copper actually enhances the flavor of the ginger and lime, too.
Absolutely! Anyone can enjoy this drink, including the kiddos. Make sure you find non-alcoholic ginger beer or ginger ale instead, and for the vodka you can simply skip it or add a bit of club soda.
- Start by cutting off the crown of the pomegranate using a knife.
- Score the skin of the pomegranate from top to bottom into sections, making shallow cuts through the skin.
- Immerse the pomegranate in a bowl of cold water and delicately split it along the scored lines.
- While submerged, use your fingers to detach the seeds from the white membrane.
- The seeds will sink, while the membrane will float. Remove the floating membrane, then strain the fresh pomegranate arils from the water.
